Hi, I’m Courtney Magee.
I live in Brisbane, Australia with my 2 year old son and my husband. I started pottery in January 2025 and fell in love with it. I practiced multiple days a week with the little spare time I had.
My pieces have a modern but colourful look with a small subtle painting that depicts real life moments and a little bit of humour. I want them to bring art and joy into your home.
I work part time as a pelvic health physiotherapist and the other time is spent making things with clay or spending time with my family. My drying racks were inspired by my pelvic health background.
Now I have a home studio set up and a kiln. Everything is made in small batches and I paint my pieces mostly at night when my son has gone to bed.
THE PROCESSOnce the clay is completely dry, it goes into a kiln for it’s first firing at nearly 1000°C for 13-15 hours.
This is then painted with glaze that turns into glass and fuses to the surface of the clay during it’s second firing at 1220°C for another 15 hours.
This is when it is no longer called clay, but called ceramic because of the chemical and physical changes it goes through in the kiln at this temperature into a highly durable and heatproof substance.
The glaze that turns to glass is what then makes it food safe because it seals the porous surface and prevents bacteria growth.
